Treatable blindness in temporal arteritis.
نویسنده
چکیده
Temporal arteritis is a common cause of blindness. Prompt steroid treatment limits unilateral visual loss while protecting the contralateral eye. Established blindness is irreversible. We report a case of temporal arteritis in which an eye with no light perception secondary to an arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy regained 6/6 vision.

Polymyalgia rheumatica and its links with giant cell arteritis.
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) was defined in 1957 and is linked with giant cell arteritis (GCA) in approximately 25% of cases. The peak incidence is between 60 and 75 years old and is increasing with the ageing population. Polymyalgia rheumatica is a clinical diagnosis without a 'gold standard' serological or histological test and there are other conditions that may mimic PMR. Treatment with a d...
متن کاملHistopathologic Features of Giant Cell Arteritis in an Actinic Granuloma Lesion
The association between actinic granuloma and giant cell arteritis (temporal arteritis) has been claimed by some authors. There is a hypothesis that actinic radiation has the principal role in the etiology of both diseases in a similar way. Here, we report a case of actinic granuloma that had characteristic pathologic features of giant cell arteritis in histopathologic examination without clini...
متن کاملPolyarteritis nodosa presenting as temporal arteritis in a 9-year-old child.
A 9-year-old Haitian girl presented initially with monocular blindness and an isolated temporal arteritis, confirmed by angiographic studies and temporal artery biopsy findings. CT and MR studies of the intracranial circulation showed only an enlarged, dense superficial temporal artery. Systemic workup revealed a mildly elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mild changes in white and red bloo...
متن کاملClinical and biopsy findings in temporal arteritis.
Hutchinson (1890) described a man aged 80 years who was prevented from wearing his hat by painful, inflamed temporal arteries. Horton, Magath, and Brown (1932) described two more patients and called the syndrome temporal arteritis. Originally thought to be a localized, self-limiting, and benign disorder, inflammation of the temporal arteries is often part of a widespread arteritis (Cooke, Cloak...
متن کاملCranial diabetes insipidus caused by giant cell arteritis.
A 78 year old woman was admitted with symptoms of diabetes insipidus and was found to have a high ESR, the cause of which was uncertain. Five months later she presented with blindness, and cranial arteritis was confirmed by temporal artery biopsy. The endocrine abnormality returned to normal after steroid therapy. The association between these two conditions is discussed.
